Removing Unwanted Tones: Scott Cornwall Colour Restore Toner Review

Scott Cornwall Colour Restore Toner Iced Platinum
Scott Cornwall Colour Restore Toner Iced Platinum

Hello again lovelies! As you may already know, my quest for platinum hair hasn't always been easy. To be honest, anyone with dyed hair will know how hard it is to maintain a colour so at least we're all in the same boat right? The main issue with bleaching my hair is the orange/yellow tones that are left behind due to my hair being naturally brown and sometimes under developing patches. I'm not complaining though as I'd rather sort those out afterwards rather than lose my hair in the process. This is where using a toner comes in very handy.

Recently I was sent some hair products to test from Scott Cornwall and the first one that I decided to try was the Scott Cornwall Colour Restore in the shade Iced Platinum*. If you're reading this and you don't have blonde hair, don't worry as this also comes in Chocolate, Cool Ash, Deep Red and Warm Honey. You can find this range in Boots for £12.99.

Packaging:
The box came with a 100ml tube of blue toner, instructions and a pair of gloves. I was pleased to see a pair of gloves in there as even though the toner itself doesn't contain peroxide or ammonia, it still may stain so it's better to be safe than sorry. As I suffer from both yellow and orange shades I was happy to see the toner was blue as my usual purple shampoo only seems to tackle the yellow tones and not the orange. If you take a look at the colour wheel, you'll see that blue is the opposite of orange which is how the toning process works to cancel it out.

Application:
There are two ways to apply this depending on the results you would like. For the first method, you can apply a small amount of toner to a gloved hand then smooth through washed and towel dried hair. Once you've done this, you comb it through for five minutes and rinse with warm water. This is meant to create deeper tones in your hair. It also states that if you are unsure, you can use it like a conditioner first and wash it off after two minutes to see how it goes. The second is the intense development method which is the one that I tried. The process is the same as the first method but after five minutes of combing it through, you then leave it for a further twenty. I found that applying this toner in a mirror helped to cover the patches that were the worst and then I sat in the bath with a face mask and waited. I did wash this off a few minutes early due to panicking that my hair looked very dark so I'd advise you to just keep your eye on it. The instructions stated not to condition afterwards as this is also a conditioning treatment. I'll just add that there is enough left in the tube for a few more applications incase any of the tones start showing through again.

Results:
I've learned by now not to look at my hair until it's fully dry otherwise I'll unnecessarily upset my self so I patiently sat with my hair towel on and eventually it was time to see the results. I'm actually amazed at how well this has lifted my hair. Usually with toners I end up multi-tonal due to the way products take to old and newly bleached hair. My roots and ends are pretty much the same colour. There are still a few patches of orange mainly underneath my hair at the back but they do look lighter. I'll be able to fix those the next time I do my hair anyways so at least it will tide me over. As for the yellow tones, they appear to have gone. My main issue with toners is that sometimes they turn my hair grey instead of white but I haven't had that issue this time. The only thing that I didn't like about the Scott Cornwall toner is that you have to comb through wet hair during the application process which was a bit of a struggle as the combination of shampoo and curly hair had made it difficult to get the comb through. This toner is meant to last 8 washes but as I only wash my hair a few times a week due to it being dry, this should last me until my next root touch up.

Scott Cornwall Colour Restore Toner Iced Platinum

Overall I'm really pleased with the results. My boyfriend even said that my hair definitely looked lighter which is a good sign right? I will also be testing out the Scott Cornwall Shine On Hair Glaze when I get a chance so if you're after shiny sleek hair keep your eyes out for my next review. Do you use a toner on your hair? What's you thoughts?

  8. Your hair is so nice! I started using a toner to get the brassy colours out of a bleached section of my hair which is working well. That's cool how it comes in different colours, like for darker hair as well! I haven't seen anything like that around here.

  22. Definitely a good sign when a guy can notice a difference in your hair! I've tried the ash version of this and was left totally disappointed but I'm glad this one worked out for you. I had the yellow tone when I last got my hair done but used the bleach silver shampoo and it helped loads although I think I'm going for that greyish look now. Lovely review this will be so helpful for future dying hair problems x

  44. The colour looks absolutely amazing! Great review too!

Did you wait a while after originally dying your hair to use this product or did you use it straight away?

The reason I ask is that I recently tried dying my hair platinum at home and I was left with a range of orangey-yellow, white and purple patches throughout my hair. I've tried so many different purple shampoos and toners but I still have weird hair. What makes it even more annoying is that I originally had blonde hair before I tried dying it!!

  45. Great advice Sophie! I'm naturally very dark and have been lightening my hair over the past year and am now platinum and loving it! I have a few orange tinged patches where I'd had highlights which I'm gonna tackle with the Scott Cornwall toner as advised by you
