5 Drugstore Favourites: The Basics

Drugstore Favourites

Hello again lovelies! I've got a special place in my heart for drugstore gems. I drift in between high end and drugstore makeup but I have to say, recently I've been really pleased with the quality of the lower end products. Remember the 90's when we wore a permanent shade of watsit? I'd like to blame the 90's for my makeup disasters but I'm not too sure if that is fully the case. Perhaps we just weren't clued up on what works due to our only source of inspiration being mizz magazine or maybe the quality of the makeup has just improved over time. What I do know from reading other blogs, is that a lot of us went through this unfortunate phase. After years of trying different brands, I've gotten better at finding products that actually work for me. A lot of it through trial and error. Some people say you pay for what you get but I don't always find this the case. Here are some of my drugstore favourites that prove you don't need to break the bank to achieve the look you want.

Maxfactor Face Infinity All Day Flawless 3 in 1 (£11.99)
I apologise for the loss of lid, but I'm only human! Now this foundation is something that I go through phases of wearing for a long time and then fancy a change. Every time I go back to this, I wonder why I even changed it.  The packaging is sleek with a gold pump system (you've got to love a bit of gold). The foundation itself is a combination of primer, concealer and foundation meaning that it gives beautiful coverage and lasting stay power. Another thing I love about this is that it comes in a range of shades and this one being perfect for pale skin without the yellow tinge. Of course, I went for the lightest which is light ivory and I found it blends perfectly giving my face the coverage it needs without looking like a mask. It also contains spf 20!

Collection 2000 Concealer (£4.99)
Now do I even need to talk about this? Every where I look, someone has reviewed this and there is a reason why. This concealer is super cheap with great coverage for blemishes. I find it isn't so great for my under eyes but that is probably because I have a toddler who wakes up at 8am and I've been binging on Netflix until the early hours so they're pretty dark at the moment. Totally my own fault, I'm addicted to Pretty Little Liars. What won me over again was the range of shades. It's one of the few concealers I've found that is actually lighter than my foundation so it gives a light glow to problem areas. I know some people have a problem with the writing on the packaging wearing off (which it has on this one) but it really doesn't bother me.

Bourjois Healthy Balance Powder (£8.99)
I bought this to go with my healthy mix foundation as I like to be matchy matchy but it's transferable to any other look. I like how this powder has a slight colouring to it as it adds a light warmth to my skin and it mattifies my makeup. If I don't want to look so matte, I just add powder lightly to my cheeks and forehead as I tend to get quite oily there. The powder claims to use Asian fruit therapy to smooth, moisturise and absorb excess shine. Plus it smells sort of fruity and doesn't seem to block my pores.

Loreal Perfection True Match Blush (£7.68)
If you read my last few posts, you'll know that I am in love with this blusher. It's a high quality blusher with lots of pigmentation. I won't bore you again with the in's and outs as I have already reviewed this. All I will say is that it is my favourite buy of the year so far and perfect for Spring. If you'd like to read my review click here.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara Very Black (£4.99)
Every time I need a new mascara, I buy a different brand just to see what I've been missing. I bought this on a whim as I had often overlooked it's simple packaging. This seems to be an iconic mascara and I actually remember my mum using this so it has been around a while. This mascara does what it is meant to do, it darkens, lengthens and volumises lashes at such a low price. I actually think this mascara is great if you're going for a natural look but you can then build on the layers to get your desired effect. If you want over dramatised lashes then this may not be for you but I really like this especially for day time.

I think these are some great alternatives to higher end products. Especially if you're like me and you no longer have that student loan to rely on! Have you tried any of these products? What are you drugstore favourites?

  7. Haha, totally with you on the 90s make up! I didn't have a clue! Tide marks round my jaw, the wrong colour concealer all over my teenage acne and shaved eyebrows filled in badly with whatever I could get my hands on (usually shimmery black eyeliner!)
Really like your choice of products, I've got a high end foundation and highlighter, but otherwise I usually use mostly drugstore. I've made the mistake in the past of thinking if I bought a more expensive concealer it would work better on my problem skin but I've not found that to be the case, I'm gonna give this collection 2000 one a go on your recommendation!

I am a ditto to you on trying out new mascaras, i have settled on Maxfactor - purple tube at the moment (haha sorry i don't remember the name), which is really good at a natural curl! Think i will be trying the face infinity next time i am at Boots! Thanks Sophie!
