Review// Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet

This seems to be the lipstick on everyone's lips at the moment (quite literally). The lipstick I'm talking about is of course Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet (£8.99). Being a huge fan of red lipstick, I couldn't resist adding another one to my collection. I picked up the shade hot pepper and I can definitely see why they called it that. It's a spicy red and it is a very bold shade. I think what drew me to this was the word velvet. I swatched this in the shop and it felt amazing and true to it's name, very velvet like. This looked like it would be sticky but it wasn't at all which won me over and straight to the check out I went.

Application
Now I tried this when I got home and I had a slight issue with the application. Everything about this reminded me of a lip gloss it even had a doe foot applicator. I had a bit of a problem applying it with the applicator as the pigment tended to linger just below my cupids bow in a line. I tried to fix it and it got a little messy with red patches around my mouth. I'm not used to using applicators with a lipstick so I think I need a little more practice. I tried this again the following day and I managed to gain a little more control over the brush although it did leave a mess again. I've looked at reviews and everyone loves it so I don't know what my problem is. I guess practice makes perfect although I'm not sure how long I'm willing to mess around with this to be honest.

Finish
The finish of the product was a really nice matte lip. It stayed wet for a little while which was worrying but after a while it started to sink in and dry leaving a velvet feeling lip behind. I found that this wasn't too drying on my lips which is important to me as this is usually an issue when it comes to buying lipstick. Although Rouge Edition Velvet wasn't drying I'd recommend exfoliating first as I can imagine this sticking to dry patches.

Lasting
Rouge Edition Velvet is meant to last up to 24 hours and it did pretty well. The lipstick lasted most of the day even after many cups of tea. It did loose some pigmentation but that is to be expected. I found that it took a while for the lipstick to dry so I'd avoid touching your lips for a bit as this was the smudgy stage. Once I'd survived this part, my lips were set for the day.

Overall
I'm on the fence with this product to be honest. It actually upsets me to say that as I feel it has so much potential. I liked how long lasting it was and the pigmentation but it's the messiness of application that I'm finding off putting. I'm going to give this another go perhaps with a different applicator and then if I still can't master it then what's meant to be is meant to be.

Have you tried any of the Rouge Edition Velvet range?

  1. I haven't tried any of these yet, but I'm desperate too! The colours look lovely - especially the one you've swatched there!! I can completely understand what you mean about the applicator though, I've had the same issues with similar products :/ Hopefully it gets better!

    Great post :)
